How to Choose a Semiconductor Fuse

Selecting the right fuse is crucial for effective protection. Here are the key parameters to consider:

· Voltage Rating (V): The fuse's voltage rating must be equal to or higher than the circuit's maximum operating voltage. Both AC and DC ratings are important, as they are not interchangeable .

· Current Rating (A): This indicates the maximum current the fuse can carry continuously without interrupting the circuit. It should be chosen based on the normal operating current of the device .

· Interrupting Rating (kA): Also known as the breaking capacity, this is the maximum fault current that the fuse can safely interrupt without damage .

· I²t Value: This is a measure of the thermal energy required to melt the fuse. Semiconductor fuses have a very low I²t value to ensure they blow faster than the thermal damage threshold of the semiconductor they are protecting .

· Speed: Look for terms like "very fast-acting" or "high speed" to ensure the fuse can clear a fault within the short time of a semiconductor device .

· Standards and Approvals: Ensure the fuse complies with relevant international standards, such as IEC 60269-4 and has necessary safety approvals (UL, CE, etc.) .
